Famous Pines at Kenroku-en

Kanazawa, Japan

Covering 28 acres and two hundred years of Tokugawa history, Kenrokuen is an exemplar of the Edo "strolling garden" style. Two of its famous pine trees are shown here: the first, Neagarinomatsu or "standing roots pine", achieved its form because of an unusual subsidence of the soil around its base.

Karasakinomatsu pine, at the foot of Kasumigaike pond, seems almost to grow out of the water in this photograph. A forest of "snow suspenders" (yukitsuri) are set up here to protect the pine trees in anticipation of winter's snowfall.

Here is a middle-distance view of Karasakinomatsu (previous photo), offered for its scale and context. As in the previous photo, the yukitsuri are everywhere evident.
