Senbon Torii

Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto

"A Thousand" (senbon) torii, all of them donations, crisscross the slopes of Inari Mountain. Usually torii mark the entrance to a shrine, but here they form a sort of protective tunnel enclosing the mountain paths.
