Shitenno

Eihei-ji Temple, Fukui (plan)

We switch over, rather abruptly, from the southwest visitors' courtyard to the main N-S axis of the temple, in particular the main gate (Sanmon) with its Shitenno (directional guardians) on the ground floor. The unfortunate chicken-wire fencing obviously precludes a good view of the sculptures. At any rate, the upper photo shows Zochoten (South) left, and Komokuten (West) right. The lower photo shows Bishamonten (North) left, and Jikokuten (East) right.
