Trowulan Gate
Trowulan, East Java
Trowulan was the site of the Majapahit court during the reign of
Hayam Wuruk, 1350 - 1389. The restored gate, seen here, was built of
brick rather than hewn stone; it is 14m (46 ft) high, rendered in graceful
proportions; its staircase and the lower part of its entranceway are integrated into a pyramidal-form base, with a gentle transition to the upper body of the
monument, which is capped by a tall, inward-curving roof. The gate is oriented north-south; its north face is seen here.
