Makara RainspoutCandi Vishnu, Prambanan Returning briefly to Candi Vishnu, we exhibit here a makara in the form of a rainspout, most appropriately since the makara is a quintessential water animal, composed of the parts of various water-loving animals such as the fish, crocodile, elephant, water-snake, etc. (no general rule can be given, since this depends on the fancy of the carver, much like the cathedral gargoyles of medieval Europe.) In this photo, a small directional guardian sits just above the makara. |
