Legong Keraton
The Oberoi Hotel, Bali
After her solo entrance, the Condong is joined by the two
identically costumed Legong. The narrative becomes difficult to
follow at this point, because the dancers can represent different characters, or even different aspects of the same character, depending on the story. For example, in Legong Lasem as seen here, Prince Lasem (Legong) abducts Princess Rangkesari (Legong), but later fights and is defeated by her fiancee1,
the crown prince of Kahuripan (who is not portrayed onstage). Meanwhile, the Condong plays first the Princess's lady-in-waiting, and later a bird of ill omen that harasses Lasem before he goes off to battle.
1In other versions, he may be her brother, not her fiancee, or a king rather than a crown prince.
