Bodhisattva Vajrapani is usually paired with Padmapani, not Avalokiteshvara (previous page); the unusual combination of Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani in this Shakyamuni Triad must reflect either an iconographic confusion, or perhaps a transitional form or a regional variant in the evolution of the triad from Padmapani/Vajrapani (earlier) to Avalokiteshvara/Manjusri (later).
