Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara

Central Shrine, Candi Mendut

The nine-foot tall statue of Avalokiteshvara is located to the viewer's left of Shakyamuni (see previous page). The Bodhisattva of Compassion is identified by a small statue of Amitabha Buddha that is carved into the top of his crown. Seated on a lotus throne in "Royal Ease," his extended right hand holds a missing attribute, and his raised left hand holds a missing lotus stem.
