Kings' Tombs

East side
Gunung Kawi, Bali

The monuments are truly impressive in scale, averaging about 7m (23ft) in height. Inscriptions originally appeared above each niche. The only one that can be read today, and that only partially, is the one over the leftmost (north) niche. It is thought to refer to King Anak Wunshu, r. 1050 - 1077 AD.

Spouts at the base of the monument directed water down from the terrace to a lower pool (next page), while the central staircase gave access to the niches for devotional purposes.
