Surasundari

First level facade, Borobudur

The lower facade (outward-facing balustrade wall) of Borobudur is decorated by finely-executed figures like these, that do not tell a story but rather depict guardians and other auspicious figures. Photo left, a voluptuous maiden (surasundari) stands in tribhanga, bearing a lotus flower on a long stem. Photo right, two maidens support a male guardian who leans on his club and seems to have had too much to drink. These themes come straight from India.
