Meru Shrines

Pura Taman Ayun, Mengwi

This view from across the moat shows how the meru shrines, so-named because their roofs represent the sacred Mt. Meru, are grouped together with brick ancestor shrines (faced with stone) at the most sacred (kaja) corner of the temple. The brick shrine in the middle is decorated with a statue of Vishnu riding Garuda (next page).
