Ayannar Shrine

Madurai, Tamil Nadu

This contemporary shrine is dedicated to Ayannar, a folk deity. The shrine, which is a one-man operation, is located near Madurai. In this sculpture Ayannar (with whip) is riding the horse. The figures below the horse are his companions (following pages). In front of the horse is a pair of giant guardians, who are depicted as wrestlers with exercise clubs.
