Jahangir Mahal

Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

The Jahangir Mahal, grandest of Orchha's palaces, was built by Bir Singh Deo (ruled 1605-1627) in the beginning of his reign to honor a state visit by the Mughal emperor. This view of the courtyard shows many typical elements of Rajput style: the chhatris and chhajjas, domes, chambers, walkways, and terraces. The palace walls were originally painted in cream color, with decorative blue tile and paintings.
