Scale of Small Sundial
(Laghu Samarat Yantra)

Jantar Mantar Observatory

The scale of this sundial is divided into hours (the large division in the shadow). The hours are further divided into intervals of one half hour, one quarter hour, five minutes, one minute, and lastly, each minute is divided into thirds. Therefore, the accuracy of this sundial is 1/3 of a minute, or 20 seconds.

Question: assuming the hour mark (in shadow) is 11:00 AM, what time was this photo taken? Hint: as the sun rises from bottom (east) to top (west), the shadow moves from top to bottom. The answer is on the next page.
