Seated Buddha

Bodhgaya, 385 AD
Indian Museum, Calcutta

This powerful image is dated by inscription, although even here some detective work is required: The inscription reads "year 64" of a king whose name is missing! However, making some reasonable assumptions about the piece, yields a generally accepted Gupta-period date of 320 + 64 = 384 (Harle, p. 105), or perhaps 385 as the museum label has it.
