The Gateway of India (1924) was built to commemorate a visit in 1911 by George V, the first by a reigning British monarch (inscription above the arch). Indo-Saracenic in style, the monument overlooks the harbor and symbolizes both an entry and an exit: after Independence in 1948, this is where the last remaining British troops departed from India.
