Mosque at Dawn

Taj Mahal, Agra

The mosque shown here, together with its echo (jawab, meaning "replica" or "duplicate") on the east side, brackets the Taj at the northern end of the complex. It is built of red sandstone with marble highlights, and uses many of the same elements (arch, dome, chhatris) as the Taj itself, although to very different effect. Mughal architecture by the time of Shah Jahan had become standardized, and would keep the same basic character from that time on.
