South Golden Pavilion Photo: Biswarup Gangully |
Khas MahalAgra Fort The upper photo shows the south golden-roofed pavilion of the Khas Mahal (Private Palace). The pavilion's curving bangla roof imitates the shape of Bengali thatched huts, in one of the characteristic styles of 17th century Mughal building, and overlooks the Jumna river to the east (photo rear). The lower photo also looks east, stepping back for an overview of the Khas Mahal from the courtyard. The Diwan-I-Khas (Audience Hall) is located at photo center. The roof of the South Golden Pavilion can be seen at photo right. It pairs with the North Golden Pavilion at photo left, in that symmetry so beloved of the Mughal architects. |
