Central Arch

South Gate, Tomb of Akbar
Sikandra, Uttar Pradesh

As with other monuments of the Mughal period, the gate is covered with elaborate decoration in pietra dura. This incredibly detailed technique of marble inlay turned out to be an ideal match for the Mughal sensibility, which combined the Persian love of complex decoration with the Koranic prohibition against portraying animals and humans on religious buildings.
