Cartouche of Ramesses IIISide chapel, rear area of temple
Throne name: User-Maat-Re, Mery-Amun. "Strong is the ma'at of Re; Beloved of Amun." Like everything in Egypt, kings' names are more complicated than they seem. The name is in two parts. The first part praises the sun god Re, identified with pharaoh, whose strength (was) upholds the cosmic order (maat). The second part tells us that the supreme god Amun approves of Ramesses and blesses his mighty works. Thus: Ramesses, God (Amun) loves him, Ramesses who is Re whose might upholds the universe. |
