Lunar Baboon

Nubian Museum, Egypt

As a manifestation of Thoth, the baboon was associated with the moon (Thoth's emblem) and was also the sacred animal of Khonsu, the moon god; this in addition to the sun, as described earlier. The disk-and-crescent on this statue is lunar, and identifies this baboon as pertaining to Thoth-Khonsu. The baboon is (obviously) anatomically correct, which seems to associate with concepts of the lunar cycle and fertility.

The statue was found near the Khepri shrine shown in an earlier photo.
