Kalabsha - Augustus Caesar and Mandulis

Augustus Caesar

New Kalabsha, Egypt

The figure on the right is Augustus Caesar, the dedicatee of the Kalabsha temple. On the left is Mandulis, the local god. The symmetry between the two may signify the cult of Augustus as a god - an innovation for Romans, but normal practice for Egypt. In Rome itself, divine honors were not paid to Augustus until after his death.
