Sobek embraces Amenhotep III

Sobek Embraces Amenhotep III

Luxor Museum

This alabaster statue shows the crocodile god Sobek extending life (ankh) to Amenhotep III. Sobek is seated, so that although he is taller (and therefore more important) than the standing king, their heights are comparable in the composition. This statue was later usurped by Ramesses II.

Sobek was identified with pharaoh by analogy with the fierceness of the crocodile's attack.
