The Coptic Church of the Virgin Mary dates from the 7th or 8th century, and was rebuilt in the 17th. It is informally known as the "Hanging Church," although "Suspended Church" would be more appropriate; the building is suspended over a section of the Fortress of Babylon-In-Egypt seen on the previous page.
