Bronze Chariot

Museum, Lishan Necropolis, Xi'an

Two extraordinary bronze chariots, each in one-half scale1 with exquisitely detailed fittings, riders, and horses, were found smashed into thousands of pieces in a place near the emperor's burial mound. The covered vehicle, seen head-on in this photo, is a model of the emperor's own carriage. The bronze horses are painted white, to imitate the special color of their living counterparts.

1In a bit of cost-cutting, the horses were modeled slightly smaller, about one-third scale.
