Tang Dynasty, Famen Si

Buddha's disciple is also called Mahakasyapa, to distinguish him from a legendary Hindu rishi (sage) who is named in the Puranas. Mahakasyapa is revered as the First Zen Patriarch, to whom Shakyamuni entrusted the hidden teachings. He is shown in iconography as an old man with wrinkled face and bony chest.
