Shancai

Altar, Main Hall, Nanchan Si

The story of Shancai (Jp. Shenzai), also known as Sudhana and Red Boy, is found in the Avatamsaka Sutra. He is a boy who sought out many bodhisattvas and teachers in his quest for enlightenment. The story is illustrated extensively at Borobudur.
