Minaret

Emin Mosque, Turpan City, Xinjiang

The Iranian-style minaret was built in 1778 by Prince Suleiman to honor his father, Prince Emin. Its tapering form is decorated with elaborate brickwork that covers the tower with pleasing geometric patterns that include herringbones, diamonds, rosettes, and equal-armed crosses; the height of each band is nicely judged in relation to the curvature of the tower at that point.

The 44m (144ft) minaret is said to be the tallest in China, per Archnet. The referenced article provides additional information and a bibliography about the history and architecture of the mosque.
