Bezeklik CavesNear Turpan, in Xinjiang A.R.
The Bezeklik caves (another view) were excavated between the 6th and 14th centuries. They are located in Xinjiang, 50km (30mi) NE of Turpan. As usual, these Buddhist cave-chapels were cut into the face of a cliff overlooking a river valley. Many of the Bezeklik paintings were removed to Berlin in the early 1900s, where they were destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II. |
