Holy Mother Hall, Jin Shrine, Shanxi
Forty-two attendants of the Holy Mother are arranged symmetrically in the chambers on either side of her throne. Most of them are palace maids, a few are eunuchs, and one or two are female entertainers dressed in male costume. Two figures are Ming replacements or repairs; the others are original Song. We show only fourteen of the statues here; the complete set can be seen, photographed to good advantage, in a booklet titled The sculptures in Jinci Temple (ISBN 7-5378-2381-2) that is available on site.
