A set of painted panels in the hall seems at first to record an imperial progress, but this procession includes a host of mythological and exotic animals, like those represented along a spirit road. This is a painting of the God of Mount Tai, making an inspection tour. The painting supposedly dates to the Song dynasty, but in its present form it must be much later; there are many anachronisms of costume and style (Bob Thorp, on-site briefing).
