Confucian Temple (Wen Miao), Suzhou

The city's Confucian temple, originally built in 1141 during the Song dynasty, was restored in the Ming dynasty (1506), destroyed in the Taiping rebellion and rebuilt in 1864, and restored twice in the 20th century (1957, 1978). It houses an important collection of stelae (photo), including several from the Song dynasty: a city map of Suzhou (or Pingjiang, as it was called then), a map of China, and a star chart.
