This gold sheath originally covered a wooden staff. An obvious emblem of the ruler's authority, this is yet another item that is unique to Sanxingdui; nothing like it has been found elsewhere. The object's surface bears incised decorations of fish and birds pierced by arrows, in front of a band of mask-like faces. (closeup).
