An elaborate stage, complete with bell and drum towers, is erected on the courtyard entrance. Performances of Peking Opera and other theatricals could be seen here. Incongruous as this might seem, the City God complex was a kind of civic center, where temple, stage, and administrative halls might easily coexist. Compare: a similar stage in Dali.
