Pingyao, Shanxi

The walled city of Pingyao (Ming and Qing, 14th century and later), located southwest of Taiyuan in Shanxi province, retains its historic character both as a World Heritage site and as a tourist destination. In some respects it might be compared to places like the Old City of Lijiang in Yunnan, but Pingyao is authentically old, and far less Disneyfied.
