VaisravanaNorth wall, Fengxian Si, Longmen Caves Directionally appropriate on the north wall of Fengxian Si, the Guardian of the North holds aloft his protective stupa while supported by a vanquished earth spirit (closeup). The earth spirit sits in the posture called "Royal Ease" (perhaps a parody) as he supports Vaisravana's right foot on or around his head (or shoulder, neck, or back; the point of attachment is ambiguous). His left knee supports Vaisravana's left foot, and he reaches out and grasps Vaisravana's ankle with his left hand to steady it an acrobat's pose. Although frequently cited as a "trampling" theme, it seems in this instance that the earth spirit, having been tamed, now serves as a mount for the Heavenly Guardian.
