Vaisravana

North wall, Fengxian Si, Longmen Caves

Directionally appropriate on the north wall of Fengxian Si, the Guardian of the North holds aloft his protective stupa while supported by a vanquished earth spirit (closeup). The earth spirit sits in the posture called "Royal Ease" (perhaps a parody) as he supports Vaisravana's right foot on or around his head (or shoulder, neck, or back; the point of attachment is ambiguous). His left knee supports Vaisravana's left foot, and he reaches out and grasps Vaisravana's ankle with his left hand to steady it – an acrobat's pose. Although frequently cited as a "trampling" theme, it seems in this instance that the earth spirit, having been tamed, now serves as a mount for the Heavenly Guardian.
