Royal Zhou Chariot Pits

This is a partial view of the excavated "royal pit," which contained 27 chariots and 76 sacrificed horses (Thorp, Visiting China's Past, p. 164). The actual horse skeletons are clearly exposed, along with impressions ("pseudomorphs") of the chariots, which are all that is left when the wood decays.
