Temple Architecture

Jokhang Temple, Lhasa, Tibet

In this part of the Jokhang, solid brackets (rather than branching dougong) support the lintels of its upper floor and roof. At photo right, butter lamps (closeup) attract the devotions of the faithful, while a staircase at left winds up into the interior of the complex. Butter is the staff of life in Tibet, being the essential ingredient in their rich tea as well as their devotional lamps.
