Lhasa, Tibet
Jokhang is the holiest temple in Tibet, founded in 639 AD under the influence of two wives of King Songtsen Gampo: Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal brought a sacred Buddha image here as her dowry, and Princess Wencheng of the Tang divined the place where the temple should be located. In this stitched-together photo (left side, right side), tall prayer flags mark the entrance to the temple, with its umbrella-covered stalls of religious vendors. Notice also the gilded decorations on the roof.
