Levels 3-5 of the pillar constitute a mandala that is decorated with a variety of fierce and benevolent deities, guardians, Buddhas, and bodhisattvas, all emanating from the Esoteric deity Vairocana (who is not seen, but is located symbolically along the axis of the pillar).
