Ceiling, Khoja Family Mosque

Aba Khoja Complex
Kashgar, Xinjiang Province (map)

This decorated ceiling shows the pleasing attention to detail and up-to-date aesthetics that could be commanded by a ruling family, even on the farthest western frontier of the Qing empire. Lintels are painted in European-influenced Qing Dynasty style (closeup); compare the Summer Palace decorations in Beijing.
