The port of Hong Kong became a British possession in 1841; it prospered greatly from European trade, as can be seen from this 1996 photo. The territory reverted to China a year later, in 1997. Its juxtaposition of modern skyscrapers and traditional boats is typical of the dialogue between modernity and tradition that characterizes China in the 21st century.
