Archaizing Jue
Southern Song Dynasty, 1127 AD - 1279 AD
Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Hangzhou
"Archaizing" means a piece that is created in imitation of an older style, but not necessarily in order to deceive. The Song Dynasty saw an upswing in antiquarian interest among Chinese scholar-elites, which created demand both for genuinely old pieces, and for new imitations. This example looks all the way back to the Shang Dynasty - which was over 2400 years ago, at that point - for inspiration.
