This unique image rests on a triple platform within a recessed niche. The niche is flanked by two pairs of bodhisattvas (not shown) in a pentad. The worship of the elemental female principle, in such an explicit form, is far removed from anything known in standard Chinese (Buddhist, Confucian, or Daoist) religion.
