Dancer and Zither Player

Eastern Han Dynasty
Three Gorges Museum, Chongqing

Figurines such as these provided entertainment in the afterlife. The dancer and musician share the same facial type and style of costume. Their bar-like, bulging cheekbones, snub nose, and recessed lower face are quite distinctive. The dancing woman holds a ribbon in her right hand, and trails her left sleeve over her hip. Her costume has many layers, revealed by her left sleeve and right leg. A pot, or perhaps a drum, rests between her feet.
