Two Naked Women

Eastern Han Dynasty
Three Gorges Museum, Chongqing

These grave-figures might have represented the power of fertility and generation to the people who used them, entirely appropriate to their funeral context: everyone who dies wants to be reborn somehow, either on earth or in heaven. The woman on the left is singing or calling out, with her arm extended. On the right, a more stylized figure with a mask-like face is extending her right breast, in the kind of gesture that might be made by a wet nurse.
