The animals and officials that line Wang Jian's spirit path are full of liveliness and character. Above, a tired but dutiful horse and a snarling tianlu guard the road. Below, a complacent general and a pop-eyed official stand ready to serve. Compare: (1) imperial and sub-imperial shendao from elsewhere in China; and (2) amusing resemblences of the pop-eyed official to Diocletian and to the Lewis Chessmen.
