Walkway Decoration

Summer Palace, Beijing

A half-mile-long covered walkway leads from the palace to Cixi's marble boat (next page). The long corridor is lined with late 19th century paintings of historical scenes. Compare the lintel decoration, at the other end of the empire, of the Khoja Family Mosque in Kashgar.
