Six kinds of animal stand guard along the spirit road (previous page). They are displayed here in their order of encounter when walking up the road from south to north: lion, xiezhi, elephant, camel, qilin, and horse. As explained on the previous page, each kind of animal is represented by two pairs of statues: one pair kneeling at rest, and the other pair standing.
