This bronze dragon, holding a flaming pearl in its left hand, is a spectacular addition to the Forbidden City "menagerie." Standing with its mate in front of Cixi's Palace of Gathering Elegance in the western palace complex, it is thought to have been cast by the order of the Empress herself.
